The Soto Gutierrez wetland is located on a privately-owned property that was originally managed for agricultural production, but was more recently developed for gravel extraction. The gravel mining and extraction activities resulted in a topography that accumulates irrigation return flows from surrounding lands during the growing season. The accumulation of irrigation return flows in the former mining pit has led to the creation of an artificial wetland that supports a wide variety of plant and animal species in an area that has witnessed the destruction of wetlands as a result of urban and agricultural development.
In partnership with Foundacion Global Nature, Soto Gutierrez wetland will be acquired and restored. This project will support increased biodiversity, improve water quality, reduce pollution, and provide new recreational and educational opportunities. The acquired land can serve as a natural area to be enjoyed by both native species and nearby residents.
