The Burnt Oak Brook runs through Watling Park in the London Borough of Barnet. The park is poor quality, and the river is largely hidden and has no wetland or connection to its floodplain. In partnership with Thames21, this project develops innovative ways to raise community awareness of flood resilience and co-develop nature-based solutions such as wetlands. The proposed wetlands in Watling Park will reconnect the river to the surrounding landscape, creating a thriving blue/green space that will provide opportunities for nature-connection and learning. A network of paths will be created to allow access to the wetlands as well as benches for quiet reflection, opportunities for pond dipping and interpretation boards to provide information on the multiple benefits of the wetlands. The project will help meet a demand for good quality biodiverse green space and will serve a densely populated urban area.
