Jenkintown Creek Forrest Rain Garden
Jenkintown Creek is a tributary to the Tookany Creek, which flows into the Delaware River in Southeast Pennsylvania. The creek passes through Alverthorpe Park, which is a 116 acre municipally-owned park that consists of athletic fields, a golf course, and tennis courts. The park experiences stormwater runoff issues, which impacts water quality.
Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership (TTF Watershed Partnership) seeks to construct a 750 square foot rain garden to capture stormwater runoff. The rain garden is designed to capture and slowly release rainwater. The designated site is a highly visible location to demonstrate the benefits of green stormwater infrastructure as a solution to non-point pollution, which is the largest issue affecting water quality in the watershed.
The improved water quality will benefit several locally important species including black nose dace, creek chub, northern two-lined salamanders, and northern red salamanders.
