The Little Calumet River, North Shore Channel, and Mill Creek are tributaries of the Chicago River system. While the Chicago River is still shaking off its reputation as an industrial waterway, the past 30 years have seen improved water quality and the combined benefits of many habitat improvement projects.

Friends of the Chicago River (Friends) and partners seek to implement riparian and upland restoration along the Little Calumet River, North Shore Channel, and Mill Creek. One of the largest challenges in improving the River system is the loss of open space and instream habitat. Friends is working to restore these areas to their original ecological form, which will allow for the return of native grasses, sedges, and forbs.

These restoration activities will not only improve wildlife habitat, but also increase the region’s capacity for stormwater filtration – improving water quality while addressing the impacts of climate change.
