Oak Creek is one of the few remaining perennial streams in Northern Arizona. It supports a vibrant ecosystem of mammals, birds, and aquatic species. The creek runs through high desert canyons and the famous red rocks of Sedona, before meeting with the Verde River, which is a major tributary of the Salt River.

There are 19 separate irrigation ditches that supply irrigation water to residents along Oak Creek. These ditches are essential for bringing irrigation water to farms and small properties, many of which are primary contributors to the local economy.

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) seeks to invest in much needed infrastructure upgrades to meet the needs of water users and aquatic habitat. The proposed project will pipe more than 5,000 feet of the leakiest section of the Mason Lane Ditch.
