The Skagit Community has been working for over a decade on the Clean Samish Initiative to try and reduce the number of toxins that are released to Samish Bay. The ecological benefits of removing harmful bacteria and excess nutrients from the system will improve dissolved oxygen levels and hopefully prevent the increased risk of harmful algae blooms. The South Edison Slough Pump Station project, implemented by the Skagit Conservation District, will utilize a portable solar pump livestock watering systems to push the high bacteria laden slough waters through a treatment system, followed by opportunity to infiltrate in a pond or ditch allowing soils, plants and biota to transform remaining nutrients. The pump would run the effluent through a particulate filter followed by a UV light to kill the bacteria. Following the particulate and UV treatment the effluent would be released in either a fountain, dispersal atomization plate, or simply released over a rock pile allowing for increased aeration.
